Home Remedies for Head Lice

Ok so you’ve got head lice, don’t worry, I’ll help you get rid of them with my natural cures! Head lice are commonly spread in schools, because of the large amount of children in one place, who are more likely than adults to come into close contact with each other, or to share hats and clothes.

Over the counter head lice treatments can be expensive, harsh on skin, and sometimes don’t even work because the lice have become resistant to the medicine, (this happened to me and my daughter).

Also if you have dreadlocks, headlice treatment can ruin your dreads, so if you want the best head lice home remedies, you’ve come to the right place!

Do I Have Head Lice?

If you’ve come to this site you’ve probably at least experienced some itching, and probably noticed some nits.  But here’s a bit more info so that you can be sure if you have an infestation not and decide whether to use one of my home remedies for head lice!

  • The first thing you may notice are nits which are lice eggs.  They can be hard to see and tend to be found on the hair near the scalp.  They are an oval shape and a yellowy white colour.  They hatch into adult lice in about a week.
  • Nits become baby lice, called nymphs, and look like adults only smaller.  They on the scalp as they feed on the blood.
  • Adult lice are about the size of a sesame seed, and vary in colour depending on the colour of your hair (cunning little things!).  Again they feed on your blood, and tend to live for about 30 days on your head.  While nits can be treated with vinegar head lice home remedies, it is not effective for adult lice.
  • If adult lice fall off your head, they can survive for up to two days, which is why it’s very important to wash all bed covers, hats and clothes on a high heat as soon as you have completed the treatments, otherwise you will just get them back!

Natural Remedies for Head Lice

Note of Caution: Essential oils and tea tree can be strong so do test the natural remedies on a patch of scalp before doing the whole head, particularly when treating children.  Make sure to dilute these oils as explained below, before applying to the head!  Make sure not to ingest any tea tree oil – if you do contact your doctor as soon as possible. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use tea tree oil.

Head Lice Home Remedies – Olive oil, Tea Tree and Lavender.

  1. Mix olive oil and a few drops of lavender oil and massage into the head.
  2. Cover with a plastic bag or shower cap for at least two hours – but four is even better.
  3. Then wrap the shower cap in a towel.
  4. Next wash thoroughly and condition, adding a couple of drops of tea tree oil to your conditioner.  Coconut conditioner is best as head lice don’t like coconut.
  5. With conditioner still in, comb out any remaining nits with a lice or flea comb, then rinse.

Voila!  Head lice gone, and some people find that the olive oil makes their hair shiny and soft (although it seems to have the opposite effect for me, but better than being infected with head lice!).

Head Lice Home Remedies – Rubbing Alcohol or Listerine

Rubbing alcohol is used in hospitals to kill germs and is safe.  Even people with sensitive skin do not tend to have a problem, but do test first to be on the safe side.

  1. Pour the alcohol or Listerine over the head and massage in thoroughly and then leave for two hours, (twenty minutes should be fine for rubbing alcohol).
  2. Wrap your head in a plastic bag or shower cap, and covering the bag with a towel.
  3. For extra power you may want to use white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar next and leave for one hour.
  4. Condition your hair (again coconut conditioner is best) and with the conditioner in, comb out the nits.

Now you and your family should be head lice free!
